Not Relevant? Nicole Scherzinger Axed From BBC Radio 1 Playlist
WENNNicole Scherzinger is one of several high profile acts to be ousted from BBC Radio 1 airwaves this week after producers deemed her latest release 'not important enough' to feature on their weekly playlist.
The former Pussycat Doll is busy promoting eighth single 'Boomerang' ahead of its release on March 10th, but Radio 1 chiefs have made the decision to axe the track from this week's playlist in favour of other, 'more important' releases.
Other tracks to be ignored include 'Miracle' by Manchester duo Hurts, 'King & Lionheart' by Icelandic indie rockers Of Monsters and Men, 'Bad Mood' by The Vaccines and 'Sticks and Stones' by Arlissa.
Following the decision Nicole and Hurts were both personally tweeted by the station, who explained that a busy week of releases prompted the decision to overlook them.
@thehurts won't be added today as there is more important releases at the station at the moment, they wrote. @NicoleSccherzy is another not to be added. Again, due to the amount of other releases this week.
Those releases include 'Daylight' by Maroon 5 and the latest track from One Direction Comic Relief single 'One Way or Another.'
In an interview with Digital Spy, Radio 1 head of music George Ergatoudis played down the station's influence over the British Top 40.
A lot of people believe we have total control over what gets in the charts and what is popular, but that simply isn't the case, he said. Of course we do have influence, but the public know what they like and if we don't acknowledge that they'll soon turn us off and go elsewhere.
Last year Radio 1 Breakfast Show DJ Nick Grimshaw generated controversy after branding Robbie Williams 'irrelevant' despite the! former Take That star claiming his fourteenth number one single with 'Candy' that week.
I don't know if he's now for a Radio 1 audience. I've never listened to a Robbie Williams song, but I really like him, he told 5 News last year. To 13 and 14-year olds he's not relevant they've got One Direction.
I liked take That when I was little, but I'm not little any more.
